Papers, 1850-1962.

Papers, 1850-1962, that belonged to various numbers of the Spann family. Included are several letters from R.D. Spann to nephew Edward Spann which discuss, in some detail, the efforts to sell the Spring Hill, Ala., home. There is also a loving letter from a mother [Mrs. James G. Spann?] to a son, urging him "to improve himself." Transcribed copies of the wills written by James G. Spann and by his son, Ransom D. Spann, reveal occasional biographical information. The papers also include a map from James G. Spann. It is identified as being a map of the Spann property at the time it was purchased by the Pritchetts in 1884. Although the map offers little detail about the land, it does mention that the property bordered Township 14 and 15 and Range 15 in Lowndes County.

The Spann family evidently came to Ala. from S.C. about 1833, eventually settling in both Lowndes Co. and City of Mobile (Spring Hill). The 1850 census indicates that the patriarch, James G. Spann, amassed a substantial number of slaves. James had five sons and two daughters (James G., Edward, Ransom Davis, Charles, John, Mary, and Eleanora). From the description of Papers, 1850-1962.
